LANG, JOHN DUNMORE.

Second Thousand; Demy 8vo; pp. 32; original green printed stitched wrappers, very good copy.
Melbourne; Printed For The Author; 1872.
John Dunmore Lang (1799- 1878) was a Scottish-born Australian Presbyterian minister, writer, politician and activist. As a churchman Lang was wilful, egotistical (twice jailed for libel). He 'preached more of the Gospel than he practised'. Lang's writings are voluminous, his activities multifarious. His power of description is remarkable, his assessment of individuals perceptive even if at times coloured by his own prejudices. His egotism defies belief, but his achievements are quite astonishing and overshadow his religious contribution. Excluding his newspaper articles his published work runs to some 10,000 pages. The cumulative issues of the first nine parts of this highly regarded and much sought chronicle of Bendigo. This set of nine parts comes with the RARE index to the first eight parts compiled by Sandra Greenwell. The Annals of Bendigo are essentially a summary of news items as appearing in the Bendigo Advertiser newspaper since its commencement of publication in 1853. The Advertiser was the first newspaper published on the Victorian Goldfields. The value of a work of reference such as the Annals depends largely upon access to an adequate index. Hence the index which was published in 1988 has become a very sort after and rare after item. Click here to Order
