William Henry (1770-1859) was an Irish missionary for the London Missionary Society, he sailed with his wife and 30 missionaries on the Duff under the command of Capt. Jas. Wilson, to the South Seas in August 1796. Within a year concerns for their safety led to them leaving with their families for Sydney where they arrived in May 1798. He then established a mission in Parramatta and preached in the north-western districts of Sydney. Henry returned to Tahiti in October 1799, following an uprising in 1808 he went back to Sydney. He then returned back to Tahiti in 1812 this time bearing Lachlan Macquarie's appointment as "Magistrate for the Pacific Islands". He reported regularly with London and maintained contacts with Samuel Marsden at Parramatta as well as corresponding with former missionaries including Rowland Hassall and other colonial clergymen such as John Dunmore Lang. Henry served as a missionary in Tahiti and nearby islands for 50 years, retiring in 1847. In his retirement in Australia he continued to preach at St. Annes, Kissing Point, and acted as school master until his death at Ryde aged 89, in April 1859. Click here to Order
