Helen Daniel was born in Woodend Victoria on July 6, 1946. She completed her secondary education at Camberwell High School and gained an arts degree at the University of Melbourne. She returned later in life to Melbourne University to study for a PhD in Australian fiction, which was conferred in 1980. She wrote book reviews for the Age in the early 1980's during which period she also ran a second-hand bookshop in Fitzroy. Her career as a critic and passionate champion of Australian literature steadily grew and she published three works of criticism and several anthologies. The most public phase of her career was when she was appointed editor of the "Australian Book Review" in 1994, a post she held until her sudden death on October 16, 2000. Click here to Order
