Convinced that an overland route for cattle was needed between the Eastern State [Port Phillip district] and the newly formed South Australia he does just that along the Murray River and what would later become the Victorian State borders with 1200 hundred sheep and 300 hundred cattle, swimming rivers, and surviving a lightning strike that kills two bullocks within 4 yards of him.
