One of the successful test vessels for his lightning conductor was HMS Beagle which survived lightning strikes unharmed on her famous voyage with Charles Darwin. He wrote several manuals based on his research of Electricity, Galvanism and Magnetism first published in the period 1848 to 1856. While well written and popular, passing through a number of editions they were deemed by his colleagues to have little value in the way of new or useful research. Click here to Order

" It has been most painful to the Lieutenant Governor in this his first Financial minute to be obliged to dwell at so much length, on the pecuniary embarrassment of the Colony; but he desires to record his conviction, that this embarrassment is but of a temporary character; and that it may be attributed in a great degree to the rapid progress and advancement of the province, which has rendered necessary a sudden and large expenditure of public funds to meet the pressure of requirements of no ordinary kind, and of unexampled difficulty of attainment."
