Ingleton on front fixed endpaper, light to mild foxing through out, a very pleasing copy. London: John Murray, Albemarle-Street. 1826.
George Anson Byron (1789-1868), was the cousin of the famous poet, a naval officer and the seventh Baron Byron. When the king and queen of Hawaii died of measles in July 1824 on a visit to England, Byron was chosen to lead the voyage that returned the bodies to their native land. Prepared by Maria Graham (1785-1824), known later as Lady Callcott, this work was published in 1826 and organised into two parts: the first gives a brief history of the islands, culminating in an account of the fatal visit; the second and larger part is compiled from journals of those on board HMS Blond. Engravings made from drawings of the ship's artist, Robert Dampier, complement observations about geography of Hawaii, its people and their customs. The remarkable journey home involved the first European sighting of Malden island and the rescue of survivors from a shipwreck. Click here to order

Deluxe Limited Edition; Lge. 8vo; pp. xv, 284; 2 colour, numerous b/w illustrations, 2 maps; portrait frontispiece; full decorated leather binding with portrait on boards; appendices, bibliography, index; .This edition is no. 2 out of 200 copies. Authors signature on title page. fine copy. (Carlton), Queensbury Hills Press, 1980.
Known generally as 'Big' Clarke and 'Moneyed' Clarke, he was widely known for his land hunger. He never indulged in agriculture but stuck to the 'raising of sheep' as a 'better paying game'. He introduced the Leicester breed of sheep into Australia. The gold rush further increased his prosperity and meat sales boomed. Money received from his wool clips he lent at high interest to Australian import houses. In time he acquired the reputation of being the richest man in Australia, this being regarded as a consequence of what his obituaries term 'parsimonious habits'. He was such a large man that 8 people were needed to carry him around on a reinforced Eucalypt pine/oak litter. Click here to order

FRIEND, DONALD.

The Farce of Sodom by The Right Honourable Earl of Rochester. Written for the Royall Company of Whoremasters and printed a-new upon the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the untimely Demise of our Noble Author in the thirty-third year of his Life. With Sets and Costumes suitable for Theatrical Performances designed by Donald Friend.
Folio (390 x 290 mm); pp. 67; illustrated endpapers, numerous b/w sketch illustrations throughout, 19 tipped-in plates (all but one in colour); original half black morocco and maroon velvet, title lettered in gilt on spine, slipcase, a fine copy. Melbourne, Gryphon Books, 1980.
'Rochester's Lyrical, lewd & licentious poems were circulated only in manuscript during his lifetime. The earliest printed Editions appeared a year after his Death. But "The Farce of Sodom" was never printed in England. For centuries its fame (or notoriety) depended on crude Continental imprints. Consequently, in England "Sodom" was a sort of obscene literary rumour, like Sullivan's ( - or was it Gilbert's?) suppressed "Sod's Opera", except to those who had privileged access to a few manuscript copies, only two of which are known to have survived until the present day. Thus this Edition is issued with a handwritten Text in keeping with the Manuscript tradition' (Editor's Note). The calligraphy is also by Donald Friend. The edition is limited to only 250 copies signed by the artist; this is number 96. Click here to order
